Managing Editor

The Managing Editor at our primary publication, the Western Wayne News, oversees and coordinates all aspects of our publication and production process for this print weekly with a growing online presence. The role is critical to ensuring we consistently deliver stories and articles that meet the local community’s information needs while maintaining the highest standards of quality and professional journalism.

Under new ownership as of October 2022, the newspaper is currently in a period of visioning and growth. We are looking for someone ready to help shape that vision and then relentlessly pursue it through the course of incremental and long-term improvements in our reporting and production work.

Candidates must have recent and significant experience working in a managing editor or equivalent leadership role in the newsroom at a journalistic/news publication, with print publication experience preferred. They should have an established record of collaborating with experienced reporters to guide a news organization through journalistic judgments and day-to-day production decisions to produce a high quality result.

A strong understanding of, and experience with, digital platforms, social media strategy, search engine optimization, and newsletter targeting are essential. The best candidates also will have a collaborative spirit and knowledge of the total operation, including audience/circulation, sales, and production. Performance will be measured by subscriber growth, engagement, and retention as well as the impact our content has on the community – audience reach and public service.

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The salary range is $45,000 to $55,000 per year depending on qualifications and experience.

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time, to lift and carry parcels, packages and other items up to 20 pounds, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials. The role requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
