Internship

Civic Spark Media and the Western Wayne News periodically offer paid internships to high school and college students interested in journalism, newspapers, local news and media. Usually ranging from 2-5 months, internships offer the opportunity for students to observe and learn about the news-gathering and media production process as well as related business and customer service operations, while contributing usefully to the same.

We are currently accepting internship applications for summer 2024 and beyond.

Hired interns will be provided with orientation and training to take on a variety of roles, projects and responsibilities, and may shift between roles during their time with us. We’ll also ask interns to propose a special project in line with their own personal and professional interests that they can design, plan and carry out over the course of the internship.

What do students who have interned with us say about the experience? One recent intern wrote, “I just want to thank you again for such a great opportunity, and this internship was a great experience for me!

Intern responsibilities could include:

  • Research for news stories
  • Graphic design and layout
  • Customer service and support including phone, email, and in-person interactions with subscribers, advertisers and other community members
  • Administrative office work including filing, data entry, research and related tasks
  • Marketing and social media activities

All internships are paid $10/hour and are usually part-time, averaging between 5-15 hours per week over the course of the 3-6 months.

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time, to lift and carry parcels, packages and other items up to 20 pounds, and to walk short distances. The role requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
