Sports coverage is an essential part of how Western Wayne News serves our community. From the Friday night lights to sectional tournaments and standout individual athletes, our readers count on us to tell the stories of local teams and players. We are seeking a sports writer to join our newsroom and work alongside our sports reporter in building strong, consistent, and timely coverage of high school athletics in Wayne County.
This role will focus on gathering information from area high school coaches and athletic departments, writing game stories and features, and helping to plan coverage for both print and online platforms.
Sports writer responsibilities could include:
- Building relationships with local coaches, athletic directors, athletes, and parents.
- Covering games and reporting results, including writing timely articles for our website and in-depth stories for our weekly print edition.
- Participating in the planning and budgeting of sports coverage across multiple schools and sports seasons.
- Reporting on standout performances, athlete profiles, and team achievements.
- Coordinating with photographers and other staff to ensure coverage is thorough and accurate.
An ideal sports writer has:
- At least one year of reporting or sports writing experience (school, freelance, or professional), with clips that show clear, accurate, and engaging writing.
- Knowledge of AP style and ability to write clean copy on deadline.
- Strong organizational skills to juggle multiple games, teams, and deadlines.
- The ability to work independently in the field while collaborating with a small newsroom team.
- Comfort with digital publishing tools and willingness to learn additional software as needed.
- Enthusiasm for local high school and community sports and a commitment to telling athlete and team stories that matter to our readers.
This is a part-time position, contract hourly or salaried employment. Compensation will be based on qualifications, work schedule and experience.
This role could be performed remotely or be located in our Cambridge City, Indiana office and/or our Richmond, Indiana office. The role requires some availability during business hours.
