Civic Spark Media and the Western Wayne News seek a Business Manager to administer multiple aspects of our daily business operations.
This role includes billing and accounts receivable for advertisers, retailers and other customers; managing, tracking and reporting on organizational finances; completing and filing various reports; researching, evaluating and pursuing opportunities for increased profitability and efficiency. While excellent written and verbal professional communication skills are a must, to thrive in this role, you’ll need to enjoy financial management, attention to accounting detail, working with minimal direction to untangle complex business challenges, and building relationships with others in the organization and throughout the community.
This role requires proficiency with a variety of online and office tools including Quickbooks or similar billing and accounting software, Google Docs and Sheets or similar office software, customer relationship management (CRM) databases, phone systems, email, Slack or similar chat programs, and others. You should be comfortable exploring and using web-based resources for completing tasks and researching questions.
In general, a typical week involves:
- Supervising management of advertising orders and receiving advertiser payments
- Following up with retail store locations about sales, payments, quantities of the newspaper requested and related items
- Entering information in accounting software, reviewing and creating reports, reconciling discrepancies
- Pursuing aging accounts receivable payments
- Evaluating customer service requests against business policies and procedures to advise customers and other team members
- Performing budgeting and financial planning tasks
- Reviewing and auditing financial management, cash handling and banking activities to ensure the use of best practices and quality controls
- Attending internal meetings and interacting by phone, email, Slack and in person with other team members and customers
- Owning and following up on a variety of business management tasks
An ideal business manager:
- Has at least three years of experience working in a management or supervisory role in a professional office environment
- Has at least three years of experience with accounting, accounts receivable, and accounts payable
- Has extensive customer service experience and a drive to develop, implement and iterate on customer service policies and procedures
- Enjoys untangling and solving business challenges using data, reports and research
- Is detail-oriented, resourceful and well organized
- Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Enjoys using online technology tools to increase efficiency and provide better service
- Has patience, grace, and a sense of humor
This full- or part-time role is located in our Cambridge City, Indiana office and/or our Richmond, Indiana office. The role requires availability during our business hours.
The full-time salary for this position is $40,000 per year. (This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure or hourly rate will take into account a person’s experience, accomplishments, work schedule and location. Civic Spark Media is committed to paying its staff equitably, and this range should not be considered a career salary limit or cap.)
Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time, to lift and carry parcels, packages and other items up to 20 pounds, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials. The role requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
